On February 14, 1876, Elisha Gray's lawyer filed a patent caveat for a telephone just hours after Bell's lawyer submitted his actual patent application. This coincidence sparked a massive legal battle. Gray's design used a liquid transmitter, a concept that Bell also successfully tested shortly after.

Bell spoke these famous words to his assistant, Thomas Watson, on March 10, 1876. He had spilled battery acid on his clothes and needed assistance, though some historians debate if the emergency was real or staged. Watson heard the voice clearly through the receiver in the next room.

Edison suggested using 'Hello' as a standard phone greeting in 1877, and it quickly caught on. Bell strongly preferred 'Ahoy-hoy', derived from the nautical greeting. Edison's choice was so influential that it actually transformed 'hello' from a rare word into a common everyday greeting.

William Gray invented the coin-operated telephone after finding it difficult to call a doctor for his sick wife. The first one was installed at the Hartford Bank. Early models required users to deposit coins after the call was connected, rather than beforehand.

On old rotary phones, dialing lower numbers took less time because the dial had a shorter distance to spin back. To save time and reduce wear on equipment, high-volume cities like New York (212) and Chicago (312) were given codes with the lowest possible clicks.
