The Brandaris is the oldest lighthouse still standing in the Netherlands. The tower you see today was built in 1594.

Sailors carried cranberries to stay healthy at sea. The berries from the washed-up barrel took root in the dunes, and today you can buy cranberry jam, juice and cake all over the island.

Willem Barentsz made three voyages into the Arctic looking for a sea route to China. The Barents Sea, north of Norway and Russia, carries his name. Abel Tasman, of the Tasman Sea, came from Groningen.

On his third voyage, Barentsz and his crew were trapped by ice on Novaya Zemlya, in the Russian Arctic, for almost a year. They built a wooden hut and called it 'Het Behouden Huys', 'the saved house'.
