Den Bosch is the capital of North Brabant, although Eindhoven and Tilburg have more people. The capital of Limburg is Maastricht.

A Bossche bol is about 12 centimetres wide. In Den Bosch itself people simply call it a chocoladebol, a chocolate ball.

He was born Jheronimus van Aken around 1450 and spent almost his whole life in the city. His paintings are full of odd little monsters and magical scenes. Bruegel admired him, but worked in Antwerp and Brussels.

During carnival the city turns into the imaginary village of Oeteldonk, and the frog is its symbol. The legend was made up in the 1880s. Kruikenstad is the carnival name of Tilburg.

When the city ran out of space, people built houses and streets right over the river. Today small boats glide through the dark tunnels underneath the old town.

Duke Henry I of Brabant founded the town on wooded dunes in the middle of a marsh. Tradition says he gave it city rights in 1185.

Van Nistelrooy was born in nearby Oss. After Den Bosch he scored goal after goal for PSV, Manchester United and Real Madrid. Van Basten came up through Ajax in Amsterdam.

HC Den Bosch is one of the strongest hockey clubs in Europe, and its women's team has dominated the Dutch league for years. Korfball is a Dutch sport too, played with a basket on a pole.

Sculptor Ton Mooy gave the angel jeans and a phone. He joked that the phone has just one button, which dials straight to heaven. The church leaders had turned down an earlier idea with jet engines.

It was called the Moerasdraak, the swamp dragon. In 1629 Frederick Henry of Orange finally took it by building a 40-kilometre dyke around the town and pumping the water away.
