Gerard Philips and his father Frederik started a small light bulb factory that grew into a worldwide electronics company. DAF also comes from Eindhoven, but it made trailers, trucks and cars.

Since 2006, artists have turned buildings, parks and the banks of the river into glowing artworks along a walking route of about 5 kilometres. It suits Eindhoven's nickname: the City of Light.

The Evoluon looks like a UFO that has just landed. Its concrete dome is 77 metres wide. It started as a science museum, became a conference centre, and reopened as a museum in 2022.

Dutch Design Week started in 2002 and fills old factories, studios and schools across the city. Eindhoven is also home to the well-known Design Academy Eindhoven.

Eindhoven was liberated on 18 September 1944. Ever since, the festival has started with a parade on that day, and streets are decorated with lights and fairy-tale scenes.
