The Maas, called the Meuse in French and English, starts in France and flows through Belgium before it reaches Maastricht. The city lies on both banks.

MVV was founded in 1902. Because there is a star on the city's coat of arms, the players are nicknamed the Star Wearers. VVV is the club from Venlo.

For centuries people dug soft limestone out of the hill to build houses. By the 1800s the tunnels stretched for about 200 kilometres, and today you can explore part of them with a guide and a lamp.

The stone bridge was built between 1280 and 1298. Before it, the Romans had a wooden bridge here, and the Latin for 'crossing of the Meuse', Mosae Trajectum, gave Maastricht its name.

Tall bookshelves now stand under the high Gothic vaults of the old church. In 2008 the British newspaper The Guardian called it the most beautiful bookshop in the world.

The first skull was found in 1764 and at first people thought it was a whale. Mosasaurus means 'lizard of the Meuse': it was a huge sea reptile. A whole period of Earth's history, the Maastrichtian, is named after the city.
