In 1891 the Philips family opened a small light bulb factory in Eindhoven, and it grew into a huge electronics company. The city still celebrates light with a yearly light art festival.

Farmers around Tilburg began weaving the wool of their sheep at home. By 1881 the town had about 145 wool mills. The industry closed in the 1960s, and one old mill is now a textile museum.
