In the old part of Giethoorn there were no roads at all: everything went by boat over the canals, under about 176 bridges. The village became famous after a funny film called Fanfare was made there in 1958.

Overijssel means 'across the IJssel'. The name was given from the point of view of the bishops of Utrecht, who ruled the land on the far side of the river.

Easter fires are an old tradition in the east of the Netherlands, in the area where Low Saxon dialects are spoken. Villages pile up wood for weeks to make their fire as big as possible.

At the Dickens Festival, hundreds of people dress up as characters from his books and stroll through the old centre. Even the streets and alleys are decorated to look like Victorian England.

Otters had disappeared from the country, but were released in the Weerribben in the early 2000s. The park is a huge maze of reed beds and peat ponds, where reed is still cut for thatched roofs.

Kampen is known for 'Kamper uien', silly stories about its own people. The town even has a summer festival named after them, and a 'Kampen sturgeon' dish that is really made of eggs.
