Windmills pumped the Beemster lake dry between 1609 and 1612. The new land was laid out in a neat grid of straight roads, ditches and rows of trees, which you can still see from the air.

A small herd of European bison, also called wisents, was set free in a closed part of the dunes. They graze the grass and bushes and keep the landscape open. You can watch them from a special viewing platform.

P.C. Hooft spent his summers at the Muiderslot in the 1600s and invited painters, poets and musicians to stay. Radboud Castle is real too, in Medemblik on the IJsselmeer.

In 1616 Willem Schouten, a ship's master from Hoorn, sailed around the cape and named it after his home town. Enkhuizen is a nearby harbour town with a famous open-air museum.
