Vlieland belonged to North Holland for a long time. In 1942 it was moved to Friesland together with Terschelling, and it stayed there after the war.

Floods and erosion slowly ate away the western end of the island. After decades of trying to rebuild, the villagers gave up in 1736, and Oost-Vlieland is now the only village.

The top of a lighthouse from IJmuiden was moved to Vlieland in 1909. It stands on one of the highest dunes in the Netherlands, about 45 metres high, so it shines far out to sea.

The Vliehors Express drives over the sand to meet a summer boat from De Cocksdorp on Texel. The Vliehors is one of the largest sand plains in north-west Europe, and part of it is used for air force training.

In 1696 de Vlamingh saw lots of small furry animals and thought they were giant rats. They were quokkas, small relatives of the kangaroo, and the island is still called Rottnest Island.
