The bolus was brought to Zeeland about 400 years ago by Jewish bakers from Spain and Portugal. While baking, the sugar melts into a sticky caramel coating. There is even a yearly contest for the best bolus baker.

Michiel de Ruyter went to sea as a boy and became the most famous admiral in Dutch history. His statue in Vlissingen looks out over the sea. Piet Hein was born in Delfshaven, near Rotterdam.

Engineers first planned to close the Eastern Scheldt with a solid dam. In the end they built giant gates that close only in a storm, so the salt water, fish and shellfish farms behind them could stay.

The rider tries to spear a little ring, hanging above the track, with the tip of a lance. In a tie-break, the ring gets smaller every round. Riders and horses are often dressed up for the occasion.

The tower was built in the 1400s as part of a church, and in 1818 a light was put on top. When the church burned down in 1831, the tower survived on its own and still guides ships today.
