The Motithang Takin Preserve was originally a small zoo, but the King of Bhutan decided to release the animals because keeping them in captivity felt unaligned with Buddhist values. However, the takins had become so domesticated that they wandered the streets of Thimphu looking for food. The preserve was established to keep them safe in their natural pine forest habitat.
