Tallahassee became Florida's capital in 1824 because it was located midway between the state's two largest cities at the time, St. Augustine and Pensacola. Traveling between them took days on horseback, so lawmakers needed a compromise meeting point. Today, the city is home to both the historic old capitol building and a modern 22-story capitol tower.
