Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada established the settlement on August 6, 1538, naming it Santa Fe de Bogotá. He led an arduous expedition up the Magdalena River looking for El Dorado. Interestingly, he was actually a trained lawyer before becoming an explorer, which influenced how he organized the early administration of the colony.
