The Battle of Fort Sumter began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate artillery opened fire on the Union-held fort in Charleston Harbor. Amazingly, during the intense 34-hour bombardment, no soldiers on either side were killed. Today, the fort is a national monument accessible to the public only by boat.
