Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, was painted pink in 1876 to welcome Queen Victoria's son, Prince Albert, as pink was traditionally associated with hospitality. The ruler, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh, even passed a law making it mandatory for all state buildings to be painted pink, a tradition still maintained in the old city today.
