While some of the canyon's deep rock layers are nearly two billion years old, the Colorado River only began cutting its path through them about 5 to 6 million years ago. This makes the canyon itself geologically young compared to the ancient stone it exposes. Interestingly, the oldest rocks at the bottom of the gorge are older than the earliest multicellular life on Earth!
