Polishing silver with aluminum foil and soda in hot water. Does that work?

It really works. Line a basin with aluminum foil, place the silver on it, sprinkle with baking soda, and pour hot water over it. The black layer (silver sulfide) reacts with the aluminum and transfers to the foil. The silver comes out shiny without polishing. Don't do this with jewelry containing glue or soft stones.
