Lake Bosumtwi was formed by a meteorite impact over one million years ago. The Ashanti people consider the lake sacred and traditionally believe that the souls of the dead come here to say goodbye to the god Twi. Because of its sacred status, custom dictates that only wooden planks called paduas can be used to fish on its waters, rather than modern boats.
