The Great Siege of Malta in 1565 saw the Ottoman Empire attempt to conquer the island, but they were repelled by the Knights of St. John and the Maltese. The immense effort and vulnerability exposed during the siege convinced Grand Master Jean de Valette of the urgent need for a new, impregnable fortified city, leading to the foundation of Valletta.
