The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center was founded in 1983 to provide a home for wild animals used in documentary films. Located about 15 miles east of Belmopan, it exclusively houses animals native to Belize, keeping them in spacious, naturalistic enclosures. The Community Baboon Sanctuary is another famous conservation project, but it is located further north and focuses specifically on black howler monkeys.
