The Sonian Forest (Forêt de Soignes/Zoniënwoud) is a vast ancient forest located to the southeast of Brussels. It is particularly famous for its impressive cathedral-like stands of tall beech trees, many of which are centuries old. A significant portion of the forest is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the "Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe." The Black Forest is in Germany. Photo: GdML, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0.
