Guernica was painted in 1937 following the brutal aerial bombing of the Basque town of Guernica by German and Italian warplanes supporting Nationalist forces. The massive black-and-white canvas became a universal symbol of the horrors of war. Picasso refused to let it reside in Spain until democracy was restored.
