Why is Wisconsin known as the "Badger State"?

In the 1820s, lead miners in southwestern Wisconsin didn't have time to build houses before winter, so they lived in temporary shelters dug directly into the hillsides. These underground dwellings reminded people of badger burrows, and the nickname stuck. Interestingly, the badger is also Wisconsin's official state animal.
