The mummification process was completely accidental. Due to a local grave tax introduced in the 19th century, bodies whose families could not pay were disinterred. Workers discovered that the extremely dry climate and specific soil conditions of the Santa Paula cemetery had naturally preserved the bodies, creating a unique and eerie attraction.
