Norway and Vietnam are almost equally long from north to south, but Norway wins by a narrow margin. • Norway (mainland): approximately 1,750 km from Lindesnes in the south to Kinnarodden in the north. • Vietnam: exactly 1,650 km from the northernmost to the southernmost point. The difference is therefore only about 100 kilometers – about the distance from Amsterdam to Groningen. Quite small, when you consider how different the countries look. Yet Norway appears much longer and larger on most world maps. This is due to the Mercator projection, the standard map projection we see almost everywhere. That projection stretches everything as you get closer to the poles. Norway is located high in the north (between 58° and 71° north latitude), while Vietnam is much closer to the equator (between 8° and 23°). As a result, Norway is artificially stretched on the map, while Vietnam appears relatively smaller than it actually is. In short: in reality the difference is small (100 km),
