Designed by Belgian architect Charles d'Heur, this unique iron schoolhouse was manufactured in Brussels, shipped across the Atlantic in pieces, and assembled in San José in 1896. It was a pioneering example of metal architecture in Latin America, built specifically to withstand the region's frequent earthquakes. It still functions as a primary school today.
