Mars's atmosphere is extremely thin, less than 1% as dense as Earth's, and is predominantly composed of carbon dioxide, making up about 95% of its volume. This high concentration of CO2 contributes to the planet's cold temperatures, as there is little atmospheric pressure to retain heat. The thin atmosphere also allows for significant temperature swings between day and night. Photo: Andrea Luck from Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 2.0.
