Livingstone Falls is a series of massive rapids on the lower course of the Congo River, dropping about 270 meters over a stretch of 350 kilometers. Because these rapids make the river impassable to ocean-going ships, a railway had to be built in the late 19th century to bypass them and connect the inland river network to the Atlantic coast.
