Francisco Pizarro established Lima in the Rímac valley because of its strategic coastal location and access to fresh water. He named it "Ciudad de los Reyes" (City of the Kings) because the site was chosen on the feast of the Epiphany. Today, Pizarro's remains rest in a dedicated chapel inside the Cathedral of Lima.
