The owl can turn its neck further. An owl can turn its head about 270 degrees in both directions (three-quarters around). This is because owls have fixed eye sockets and cannot move their eyes; they must therefore turn their entire head to look. They have 14 neck vertebrae (humans have 7) and special adaptations in their blood vessels and joints so that the vessels do not constrict. The wryneck, a family of the woodpecker (Jynx torquilla), is named after its striking, snake-like neck movements. When threatened or disturbed, it can turn its head about 180 degrees in each direction and make hissing sounds as a defense. This is impressive and unique, but less far than with the owl. In short: the owl wins with 270° versus the owl's approximately 180°.
