Copán was a major capital of the Maya civilization between the 5th and 9th centuries. Its spectacular hieroglyphic stairway features more than 2,000 individual glyphs carved into 63 stone steps, making it the longest known Maya hieroglyphic text in existence. Interestingly, the city was also home to a grand ball court where athletes played a ceremonial game using a heavy, solid rubber ball.
