Constructed by the Spanish in the late 1600s, the Castillo de San Marcos is made of a rare limestone called coquina, which is composed of ancient shell fragments. Because coquina is relatively soft, it acted like a sponge during battles, absorbing the impact of enemy cannonballs rather than shattering.
