Before the Greeks named the region Tripolis, meaning "Three Cities," the Phoenicians founded the settlement as Oea in the 7th century BC. Along with Sabratha and Leptis Magna, Oea formed the trio of cities that gave the region of Tripolitania its name. Today, the ancient ruins of Oea lie mostly buried beneath modern Tripoli.
