The octagonal Dome of the Rock was finished in 691 CE under the caliph Abd al-Malik, which makes it one of the oldest surviving Islamic buildings anywhere. Its gold dome is the shape most people picture when they think of Jerusalem. The Al-Aqsa Mosque stands on the same compound but is a different building, and the two are often mixed up.
