Why did the narrow strip of land known as the Oklahoma Panhandle originally become part of the territory?

The Oklahoma Panhandle exists because of the Missouri Compromise, which banned slavery north of the latitude 36°30' parallel. To remain a slave state, Texas had to give up this strip of land, which sat north of that line. For decades, it was a lawless region known as "No Man's Land" before joining Oklahoma.
