Captain Alexander Grant founded the settlement in 1816 to serve as a military outpost. His primary mission was to suppress the illegal transatlantic slave trade after the British Empire abolished it in 1807. Grant signed a treaty with the local King of Kombo to secure the island, marking the start of modern Banjul.
