The very first durable color photograph, presented by physicist James Clerk Maxwell and taken by Thomas Sutton, depicted a striped tartan ribbon. They achieved this by photographing the ribbon three times through red, green, and blue filters, then projecting the images together. Interestingly, the plates used were actually insensitive to red light, and the image only worked because the red fabric also reflected ultraviolet light!
