The Rub' al Khali, or Empty Quarter, is the largest contiguous sand desert in the world. It covers about 250,000 square miles, spanning several countries but mostly lying within Saudi Arabia. Interestingly, despite its hyper-arid environment, it contains deep underground water reserves and is home to unique desert wildlife like beetles and arachnids.
