The Dutch were the first Europeans to establish permanent settlements in Guyana, setting up colonies along the Essequibo, Demerara, and Berbice rivers in the early 17th century. They built many of the canals and drainage systems still used today. Control shifted to the British in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
