Jerónimos Monastery monks used leftover egg whites to starch their clothes, which left them with an abundance of egg yolks. To avoid waste, they created the delicious pastel de nata, a custard tart with a flaky crust. Following the monastery's closure in 1834, the secret recipe was sold to a nearby sugar refinery, which still bakes them today. Photo: Mon Œil, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 2.0.
