The striking pink hue of Lake Retba is caused by the salt-loving microalgae Dunaliella salina. This organism produces a red pigment to absorb sunlight for energy. Because of its extreme salt content, which can reach up to 40 percent in some areas, swimmers can float effortlessly on the water, much like in the famous Dead Sea.
