The French cargo ship SS Mont-Blanc was packed with tons of wartime explosives when it collided with the Norwegian vessel SS Imo in Halifax Harbour. The resulting blast was the largest man-made explosion before the atomic bomb. Surprisingly, the force of the detonation was so powerful that it launched one of the Mont-Blanc's anchor shafts over three kilometers across the city, where it remains today as a historical monument.
