Dr. John Cook Bennett, an American physician, heavily promoted tomato ketchup in the 1830s as a health tonic. He claimed it could cure indigestion, diarrhea, and even jaundice. Tomatoes belonged to the nightshade family (which includes some poisonous plants), so people at the time believed they had medicinal properties. It only became a regular table condiment later in the 19th century.
