The story goes back to 9th-century Ethiopia. A goat herder named Kaldi noticed his goats were jumping around full of energy after eating red berries from a shrub. Curious, he tried some himself and felt the same buzz. Monks at a nearby monastery started using the berries to stay awake during long prayers. Ethiopia is still considered the birthplace of coffee.
