Correct answer: 1974

In South Limburg (Netherlands), the coal mines closed between 1965 and 1974. Minister Joop den Uyl announced it in 1965: due to cheap natural gas from Slochteren and cheaper imported coal, extraction was no longer profitable. On December 31, 1974, the Oranje-Nassau I in Heerlen brought up the very last coal – the end of an era that gave tens of thousands of families work and identity. The mining past is still deeply embedded in the Limburg DNA!
