Major-General Charles George Gordon, often known as "Gordon of Khartoum," died during the fall of the city to the Mahdist forces in January 1885. His death shocked Victorian Britain and led to a major retributive expedition years later. Interestingly, a statue of Gordon on a camel once stood in Khartoum but was relocated to England after Sudan gained independence.
