At the highest point of Klimmen stood a Roman burgus, a fortified watchtower overlooking the Via Belgica, the main Roman road from Boulogne-sur-Mer to Cologne. The nave of the church still contains Roman masonry from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Nowhere else in the rural landscape of Western Europe has so much of such a burgus been preserved above ground.
