The Sudd is an immense swamp in South Sudan, spanning over 30,000 square kilometers depending on the season. It is one of the largest freshwater wetlands in the Nile Basin. Interestingly, its name translates to 'barrier' or 'obstruction' in Arabic, as its thick vegetation historically blocked navigation for explorers searching for the source of the Nile.
