The Leonine Wall was built in the 9th century by Pope Leo IV to protect the Vatican area from raids. Today, parts of this ancient stone fortification still define the boundaries of the tiny city-state. Interestingly, a secret elevated passageway called the Passetto di Borgo runs atop a portion of these historic walls, linking the Vatican directly to Castel Sant'Angelo.
