Juan de Salazar y Espinosa founded the fort of Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion in 1537. Pedro de Mendoza founded Buenos Aires around the same time. Asuncion is one of the oldest cities in South America, often called the Mother of Cities because it was the starting point for many colonial expeditions.
